Under the Hard Exterior, We Are Human

Yesterday, I watched The Devil Wears Prada, and I didn’t expect it to move me the way it did.

It wasn’t the fashion.
It wasn’t the glamour.

It was a quiet moment…
When Emily Charlton—sharp, driven, unapologetically tough—looked at Andy Sachs and asked, almost unexpectedly, “Can we be friends?”

And just like that, something shifted.

All the tension, the competition, the harsh words… softened into something deeply human.

It made me think about how often we move through life—especially at work—wearing our armor.
Deadlines, pressure, expectations… they shape us.
Sometimes they harden us.

We become efficient. Direct. Focused.
But also, at times, distant. Defensive. Misunderstood.

In my own world, I see this every day.
Different personalities. Different pressures.
Moments where people show up as difficult, resistant, or closed off.

And it’s easy to respond at that level.
To meet hardness with hardness.

But what if…
underneath all of that… there is simply a person trying to cope?

A person who is tired.
A person who feels overwhelmed.
A person who wants to be seen, even if they don’t know how to ask for it.

That moment in the movie reminded me of something simple, but powerful:
We are all human first.

And maybe leadership, and life, isn’t just about driving results or getting things done.
Maybe it’s also about choosing to see beyond the surface.

To hold standards, yes—
but also to hold space.

Because sometimes, all it takes is one moment of understanding…
to turn tension into connection.

And behind every hard exterior…
there is a story we may never fully know.
